4 effective productivity boosters at work

Discover how to improve your productivity at work and enjoy a happier, more balanced lifestyle.

Having to sacrifice family time for work is a common gripe. In fact, almost half of Singaporeans feel that long working hours keep them from spending enough time with their loved ones, according to a 2016 survey by Families for Life. In another poll conducted in the same year, roughly two-thirds of nearly 1,000 respondents stated that they felt obliged to work longer than their contracted hours.

Thankfully, there are ways to boost your productivity at work so you can get more done in less time. Even better, these tips are long-term solutions that can help you lead a more fulfilling life — with more time for people you treasure and for your hobbies.

1. Plant power

Putting plants in your office where you can see them, such as at the corner of your desk, could increase your productivity by 15 percent. One of the experiments involved in the study showed that having a direct view of at least two plants could result in greater workplace satisfaction and improved concentration. Even if you have to commit to a bit of overtime, you might just leave a flora-enriched office feeling a little better.

2. Make a to-do list every morning

At the start of every workday, make a list to give you an overview of and structure to what needs to be done. Prioritise and start with the tasks that are most urgent, so you complete those first and they don’t weigh on your mind. Keeping track of how much time you spend on each task also helps you stay focused and realise which areas might be taking more time than necessary, allowing you to re-prioritise what’s more crucial or useful.

3. Know yourself

No two people work the same way. If you’re the type who feels most energised in the mornings, schedule important meetings or tasks earlier in the workday. If moving about helps keep you alert and focused, take regular exercise breaks such as brief five-minute to 10-minute walks around your office building to refresh yourself or get your creative juices flowing. Working according to your personal style lets you gain control of your schedule and maximise your productivity.

4. Avoid a perfectionist mindset

You might want to give your all for every task, but perfection is often either impossible or unnecessary. Once you recognise that not everything needs to be perfect, you’ll likely be happier at work. Be open to asking your colleagues for their help or input; this can help alleviate your workload and build relationships at work.
